Walima invitation wording from the groom's family
In this article
The Walima is the groom's family's celebration, held after the Nikah and Rukhsati to welcome the bride and share the family's happiness. It is a Sunnah, which gives it a particular warmth, and it is often the largest function on the groom's side: relatives, neighbours, the whole office and friends of the family all come.
That breadth is why Walima wording needs a little thought. The same card has to feel right to a grandfather in Gujranwala and a manager in Karachi.
Who hosts and who is named
The groom's parents are the hosts and are named as the inviters. The couple are named together: the groom as “our son”, and the bride with her father's name (D/O), which honours her family. If the groom's father has passed away, the invitation can come from his mother and brothers, or from the eldest member of the family.
The formal Walima card
This is the version for the printed card, elders and anyone you would address as “respected”. It uses the traditional phrase دعوتِ ولیمہ (Dawat-e-Walima).

Mentioning the Sunnah
Some families like the Walima card to acknowledge that the Walima is a Sunnah, with a line such as “On the occasion of the Sunnah Walima of our son”. It is a graceful touch, especially on the Urdu side, where سنتِ ولیمہ reads naturally. Keep it to one line: the card is an invitation, not a sermon, and the warmth comes from the welcome rather than from a long religious preface.
If you would rather keep the card simple, Bismillah at the top is enough. Nobody will think the less of it.
A warmer version
For cousins, friends and family who already know every detail of the wedding, a warmer tone often feels more natural. It is the same information with fewer titles.
Our family has grown by one, Alhamdulillah! Come and celebrate with us as we welcome Ayesha into our home at Hamza and Ayesha's Walima Sunday, 13 December 2026, from 8 pm The Grand Marquee, Raiwind Road, Lahore With love and duas, The Qureshi family

For office colleagues
Colleagues are usually invited to the Walima only, and they appreciate a clear, short message with the essentials. Avoid inside jokes and family shorthand, and give a clear time so people can plan around work.
Dear colleagues, It would mean a lot to have you at my Walima reception. Sunday, 13 December 2026, 8:00 pm The Grand Marquee, Raiwind Road, Lahore Please reply on the invitation so we can plan seating. Hamza Qureshi

When the Walima is abroad
Many diaspora families hold the Nikah and Baraat in Pakistan and a Walima or reception later in the UK, Canada or the Gulf. The wording stays the same; just make the date, city and dress expectations very clear, because guests abroad may not assume desi formals.
Following their Nikah in Lahore, the Qureshi family invites you to celebrate Hamza and Ayesha's Walima reception Saturday, 9 January 2027, 6:30 pm The Regency Suite, Bradford Dress: formal or traditional Dinner will be served.
Small details that matter
- Match the bride's father's name exactly to the Nikah and Baraat cards.
- If there are separate arrangements for ladies, say so.
- Give a dinner time. Walima guests often come straight from work.
- Name one person to call. The groom's mobile is not a good choice on the day.
If the Walima is part of one digital invitation that also includes the Mehndi and Baraat, you will get a separate headcount for it, which is exactly what the caterer will ask for. Read more about how many functions to put on one invitation, or see what's included on the pricing page.
